"Keeps crashing" isn't specific enough for me to offer meaningful advice. My
experience is that you can have long docs in Word, having worked with a 664
page doc and one that was right around 1000 (my 'how to do my job' novel).
Why is the doc crashing? Are styles applied or is it a hodge-podge of
manually formatted Normal?
Have you tried selecting all text but the last paragraph mark, copying,
opening a new doc, pasting, and working with that?
Do you have tables that are long cells that are not allowed to split across
a page?
What happens immediately before it crashes? Is it repeatable, meaning if you
do a sequence of steps, it'll crash and when you re-open the doc, repeating
that same sequence of steps causes it to crash.
How were the graphics in the doc, if any, inserted?
Before I would go looking into other methods/tools, I would want to know
what is causing the issue(s) that make the doc crash.
