I know the economy is in the toilet and a lot of people have been out of work. As such many companies have been offering nothing to writers. I saw some ads in Florida this last spring which were as low as $13 per hour. some ads from the West Coast have been low $20s and I know that health insurance premiums alone can eat up practically all of that. A year ago, a company switched vendors and the new vendor offered us health insurance, but the catch was, the amount I would pay was about $2300 per month for the family plan.
What do most of you consider acceptable? Do you tell the recruiter simply no thanks or do you burn them with a "$XX per hour? Are you &%$#* nuts?" reply? Or do you calmly try to educate them that a low offer like that is far below anything someone can live on or that a responsible technical writer would accept?
Why I ask is I received this in the email and the rate is what I would consider great for 1985. Does Volt think because they are a $2 billion sales company I should work for peanuts?

JOB DUTIES: This position will be responsible for the development and maintenance of a team web/portal page that will allow for team collaboration as well as provide useful information and training data to non-team members. In addition this position will support the development of department presentation material and written correspondence.
JOB SKILLS: This position should have an above average knowledge of the varies software tools required for web/portal page development and all of the various drawing, presentation, and writing tools such as Visio, MS powerpoint, MS word and Adobe reader and writer
