TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
****** Before everyone jumps in with good advice about alternate ways to visually distinguish things (such as shading, patterns, etc.), let me say that the color perception is NOT required to effectively use and understand the write-up -- itâs just a nice extra that makes it easy to correlate which âprofileâ youâre using with a set of configuration values that are color-coded in a table. But each âcolorâ has its own column, and all thatâs needed is to read the column headings. So if all one sees is gray, it doesnât matter.
And if this color is entirely superfluous (as it is), a reasonable question would be, âthen why use the color?â And the answer is, because this doc is supposed to be âflashierâ, âmore invitingâ, âhave lots of graphicsâ, âappeal to non-technical typesâ, etc., than the more technical docs that I generally write for this client.
So, if youâre color-blind and wouldnât mind taking a 2-second look at a graphic and telling me what you see (and which form of color-blindness you have), please email me off-list and Iâll send you the graphic.
