I've been creating EPUB electronic books from DITA content for about six months now and couldnt' be happier. We use oXygen, which has excellent EPUB /DITA support built in. It's proven so popular that our current plans are to provide EPUB ebooks of all our documentation in that format, in addition to our documentation website.
What's great about the EPUB format is that you can view it just fine, even without an iPad or a Nook. There's a great plug-in to Firefox as well as Adobe Digital Editions for desktop viewing, both free of charge. Kindle doesn't support EPUBS, but the Kindlegen tool will create a MOBI file from an EPUB file quite easily.
