TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
BTW, the woman who comes to clean our house once a week (Ottawa,
Ontario) gets $15 per hour for 3 hours (-ish). No agency. Our
buck is running about par with your buck, these days.
Just for perspective.
On the third hand, my youngest brother's first wife started
flipping burgers at McD while at college (then did every
other job in the store), became a store manager, and then
a regional manager, at *considerably* more than minimum wage.
She was being groomed for the executive ranks before
quitting to go teach in some far-eastern country.
Apparently, McD was so good to her while she was getting her
degree in Education, that she stayed with them full-time for
several years before deciding to return to her passion.
Currently, in Ontario, Canada, as a TW, I make a LOT more than
the cleaning lady or the burger flippers, but considerably
less than either little brother OR his first wife (before
the career switch).
But then, he still lives in Toronto-ish, and commutes by car about
3 hours per day, while I can commute to my job in less than an
hour and fifteen minutes.... on foot, in winter, when I don't
take the bicycle (28 minutes if the streets are relatively
bare -and THANK YOU, Schwalbe for the Marathon Winter tire
with ice studs)
It's all relative. Location makes a big difference.
I don't know that I'd want to _work_ in Florida, but
retiring there still holds some charm.
-k (Looking out the window and rather dreading the bike-ride
home this evening, on 5cm of today's fresh snow overlaid by
currently falling freezing rain... hindsight is so much more
common than foresight, ain't it?)
