Fortunately, many employers treat tech writers as professionals in their
own right. As for those who think tech writing is "only typing" - I
imagine they get what they pay for.

Isn't the real issue here that employers think technical writing is an
unskilled position? I'm sure we all remember that message from a few
weeks ago where an anonymous member's boss offered the time of an admin
assistant as 'support'. "After all, anyone can write." This doesn't
happen in the rest of the tech industry ("We need a new dev.? Get that
kid in from reception - after all, it's only typing"), so why does it
happen with us?
