Not to worry. If general literacy in the candidate pool declines, it'll just reduce the competition the more capable candidates will have.

Of greater concern to our profession, I think, is a decline in literacy in our user base. I'm not TOO worried about the engineers and scientists who use the stuff I work on not being able to read simple instructions, but I can see how someone doing documentation for consumer goods may eventually have to develop the necessary skills to become a mangaka,

The tie in, IMHO, is the competency level of the next generation of Technical Writers. At my last job, I wrote code comments directly in the .c and .h files using DevC++ IDE (we gave the source code to our customers). A spell checker was not an option; I was the spell checker.
