I know nothing of how any of the news wire services (do we still call them that?) but I do know from seeing local ads for part and full-time journalists for some Chicago area publications.... that $10 an hour contracting job might pay more. Reporting (of the print and not "a head on a TV" variety) has not paid well in a very, very long time. Unless you really have a passion, there are other professions where you can use your skills that offer way better paychecks. And it was bound to happen eventually... you start to get what you pay for.
