There does seem to be a move to sacrifice independence for portability
through netbooks and tablets. Also, cloud-based services provide
expanded opportunities for real time collaboration.
If a company has sufficient resources, it's IT department could set up
it's own private cloud. I know of at least one multinational company
that mirrors servers between their various locations. This way, local
staff can work on files from thei local server, and any changes get
pushed to the other locations when the files are saved.
However, cloud backup services provide a means for us to store copies
of our work safely away from our premises. We no longer back up to
tape. Files are too large to store conveniently on multiple DVDs.
Server backups could easily be lost should the computer be stolen. Not
everyone has the facility to swap out their hard drives and store in a
safe location.
The widespread availability of internet at broadband speed provides
opportunities for services like the discussed to become economical,
and practical, means to store copies of their work offsite.
