This isn't about personal preferences, but rather about established style
guides well accepted within the technical writing community.
Granted, Sun's style guide may differ from that of M$ or Apple, just as the
*Chicago Manual of Style* and the AP style guide are sometimes at odds. The
point is to write to a known standard, rather than letting personal
preference dictate.
