As per our earlier conversation: These are certificate programs, not
certification programs.
Certificate programs give you a certificate that you passed their
course.
Certification programs give you a certification that is generally
recognized by outside bodies as proof of your qualifications.
For example, I have a certificate that I passed the QAI ISO 13485:2003
Lead Quality Auditor program, as instructed by an RABQSA-recognized QMS
Lead Auditor. This is *not* the same as a certification of being an
RABQSA-recognized QMS Lead Auditor - which I am not.

Subject: Re: Online Certification for Technical Writers
Your timing is a little off, as Vancouver Island University advertised
on
TechWhirl all last week about their program and associated webinar.
Fortunately, they appear to be having another one next month: http://pr.viu.ca/techcomm/webreg.asp
I have no experience with this (or any other) online certificate
program,
but do appreciate VIU's support for this community.
I'll also note that my alma mater, the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee,
has an online graduate level certificate in Professional Writing and
Communication. Information is here: http://www4.uwm.edu/letsci/techcom/index.cfm
