Several years ago, after a bit of department shifting, I was placed
under someone recently promoted from senior editor to managing editor
(I'm pretty sure that I made as much or more than the senior editors).
My new boss and I got along fine, until it was time to hand out raises.
That's when he became aware of what I made. Our relationship has been
noticeably cooler ever since.

The last time I was docs manager, I was paid quite a bit less than 2 of
my staff. I found that very frustrating. In terms of morale, it's a bad
idea.
