Thanks to all who responded so promptly. I really appreciate it.
I decided to go with "...negative NPV of $???" It seems to make sense and sure is better than those parentheses, which are commonly used in accounting. I'd expect them on a table or in a graphic, but not in straight text.
Now to fix that one last sentence and this paper is finally finished.
