I'm a contract writer and have been for a lot of years. There is no
difference except I do a lot of my work out of my home office. I still have
to interact with people (interview SMEs, take product photographs, attend
review meetings, promote myself to new potential contracts, and so on).

I suspect that the article was thinking more of contract writers who
primarily work from home and just have one contact person with the client.

It is very hard to be successful at this profession if you hide in your
cubicle and refuse to talk to people. How can you possibly gather
information if you don't like people? Most of my day is spent asking
questions, interviewing people and gathering information. Only about 20% is
actually writing the manuals..
