I did personally receive a suggestion for a very easy way to find the linked graphics: using File > Edit Links to Files. Sounds similar to what you are suggesting.
I guess for now I need to use "Insert and Link" when importing the screen shots, as my reviewers want to mark up Word files, but when I make the Gigantico Doc, I do not want the graphics embedded.
Word makes me feel like I'm losing my mind sometimes...
