physical B2B products: moving from end-user CDs to download

Hi all,
Before making the above move, I'd like to know how other B2B vendors of physical products (not SW) provide product documentation.
* How do vendors provide documentation (as a CD or as a download from the vendor's site, or even printed)?
* If by download, is there free public access or the users must identify themselves or enter data such as a serial number?
* Is there anything in the package that points the user to a specific page on the vendor's site?
* Do they have to scan a code for that?
* Is the documentation download tied to registration and warrantee activation or anything else?
Thanks in advance.
Erika
