I used to have a long 7 or 8 page resume. The company that I worked for encouraged them because it helped them with putting together proposals. They'd cut out what wasn't needed. Old information sometimes helped bolster claims of expertise.

When I started looking for work I had a very difficult time. I had no idea that the length of my resume was a problem until I showed a friend who was horrified.

I have lots of different types of experiences and try to consolidate as much as I can without diluting the resume. That is hard.

I'm not in the market now, but like to keep my resume pretty up to date every few months. Its a habit that most contractors develop I would imagine. Reading the responses to this thread, particularly from those who review resumes have been quite enlightening and should prove useful during my next update.
