Yes, your second example is the one I was referring to. The old shortcut
still works to bring up that option in Word 2010.

There are two different "Automatically Update Styles" settings. Tony is
talking about the setting that can be applied to each individual style,
and he is right. You don't want that one set, ever. I can't think of a
use for it.
However, the "Automatically update document styles" setting for
templates is applied when you attach a template to a document and only
changes styles when the template is attached. John DOES want that one.
Otherwise when he changes the template style the corresponding document
style will not change.
