I'm not a Kindle user, and I found the information about Kindle formats in the "Ebook Format Conversion" section of the calibre FAQ somewhat puzzling. MOBI is in both the input and output formats lists; AWZ3 is only in the output list. But the note that follows the format lists says in part:
"MOBI books can be of two types Mobi6 and KF8. calibre fully supports both. MOBI files often have .azw or .azw3 file extensions"
So is AWZ3:
-- a file format, distinct from Mobi6 and KF8?
-- a file extension used for MOBI files (of one type or the other...)?
-- both (just to confuse people)?
