The BLS page also shows median salaries, but only on a national basis.

Wow, I live in Northern Virginia and it appears I am underpaid. Although
mean salaries can be inaccurate or unrealistic because exceptionally
high salaries bring the mean up (and exceptionally low bring the mean
down) whereas median salary is a more accurate assessment of where the
vast majority of a population sample lies.

Regarding cost-of-living... An annual salary of $45k would result in me
not being able to pay my bills in Northern Virginia. That's the starting
salary for public school teachers here and they need second jobs in
order to survive.

You can get a broad picture of US salaries from the BLS at

Geography is a pretty big factor. The annual mean salary for Northern
Virginia tech writers is nearly $80,000, while in West Virginia it's a
little over $45,000. I imagine the cost of living has a similar range.
