I started documenting tube systems in the 1970s and ended up documenting
chip design and wafer bonding systems, so it's hard to say which one was the
most fun or creative. However, early in my career, I bet the president of a
company I was working for that I could writing them an effective reference
manual. Prior to my attempt, the best they could do was a three-ring binder
full of production drawings. In less than three months, I delivered a 300+
manual (complete with illustrations) that they used to sell 10 systems to
IBM. The sales person got a raise and a month long vacation. I was given the
task of writing the accompanying programming manual. Such is the life of a
tech writer.
