RE: Telecommuting ( was: Do as I say, not as I do )

After I was here for over a year and had proven myself to some extent, I asked to be allowed to work from home one day a week. I made a verbal agreement with my then-manager. As far as I remember, telecommuting wasn't included in any original discussion.

In many situations, telecommuting is one of the conditions of employment, and negotiated and included in the offer of employment. I can't honestly predict how I would react should the conditions of my employment be suddenly altered without discussion or negotiation. I suppose it would depend on many factors, including my respect for the company, my enjoyment of the work, etc.

I'm describing telecommuting as a privilege, because that is how our HR department describes it.

Telecommuting is not a perk or privilege. It's a working arrangement that suits the mutual convenience of both employer and employee. As such, it is among all those "other job requirements and/or conditions"
that are subject to change as the needs of the job are reevaluated. The employee is has an equal prerogative to decide the job requirements no longer suit his or her needs. The possibility that employees may leave is something the employer has to be prepared for any time the nature of the job changes.
