I'm an honorary tester, 'cuz I break things. Often in unexpected ways. I'm
not hands-off. On the other hand, I'm not totally conversant with all the
ways our products are used - there aren't enough hours in the year. Our
team of testers can validate with only a select handful, and then, only on
a subset of platforms (computers and operating systems... and versions
thereof).
Our products are meant to be used either with customer-developed apps -
which by definition I haven't met and might never meet - or with
third-party apps. Some of those third-party apps have relatively defined
edges. Others are massive things of the sort that are commissioned with the
help of consultants or of the professional-services people from the vendor,
to fit the end-customer's specific situation. Heck will freeze over before
I ever get on the same continent with any of those.
