After I got my jaw off the floor, I think I would have asked him to -- no cheating with Google or Dictionary.com -- define what he thinks "proofreading" means. If his whopper was an honest statement, then I have a hundred bucks here that says he has no clue what even so ordinary an English word actually means. A Turing test might be in order.... well, another pass at a Turing test... he's already failing...
More likely, it's what Mike alluded to, earlier, where they're actually trying to discourage people from applying for reasons of politics/in-fighting at the employer company.

I once was called by a recruiter who asked about proofreading skills. Told him I had been doing that since 1982. He said he was concerned that my skills had "degenerated" since then. If only I could have reached through that phone. ...
