An hour later, we figured out that what he saw (and he confirmed) was the
alternating inside margin width from looking at the wider inside margin
necessary for binding.
I would be tempted to shift from side to side while talking to him and ask if he thought my conversation was "all over the place." But that might actually earn a "shape up or ship out."
