Writing in DITA/XML, we surround them with <userinput> elements, which
are formatted by our transforms as a fixed-width typeface.
In Unstructured Frame, we used a character style that used a
fixed-width typeface.
We made sure to select a typeface that easily distinguished zero from O
and one from lowercase-L and I.
(If you wanted to be doubly sure, choose a typeface with a medium
weight, also--assuming, of course, that your body text is normal
weight.)
So long as the surrounding, body typeface(s) are not also fixed-width,
it's perfectly clear.

How do you folks mention usernames and passwords?
I usually see usernames and passwords written with quotes and then
something follows, saying, "(without the quotes)."
Is there an easier way? Bolding, perhaps?
