No cell service? Did you backup to your computer prior to doing the upgrade? If so, you could restore from backup. Otherwise I'd recommend bringing it into an Apple Store to have them look at it. It doesn't cost anything for them to look at it. And they will be able to tell what's wrong.

Nope; no backup. I find iTunes to be among the most unintuitive, most difficult programs to navigate. I regularly question why I can't seem to get the hang of it. Perhaps too many years with DOS, Intel-based systems, Windows, and the like? So I waited a week after the update came out and nobody I knew had problems, so I updated to iOS 8.0.1. And things were fine for the first week! But then all of a sudden I had No Service. So I upgraded to 8.0.2, but that didn't fix it. So then I googled the issue and tried some of the easier solutions (reset network, turn airplane mode off/on, something else I think), but nothing's helping.

So it's off to the Genius Bar. And I maintain that they're not really geniuses, just people who understand the Apple world as well as I can deal with the Windows world. And I'm outraged at Apple for foisting this on us. What a ridiculous thing: update a phone and then you can't use the phone!
