Single-sourcing with Word (an extension to Large Documents in Word)

Something that occurred to me over the long weekend was that I usually
generate 2 or more documents from the same set of FrameMaker files by using
conditional text and a settings file.
I can't find ANYTHING that tells me if Word has an equivalent or
near-equivalent way of doing this. The only thing I've seen about
conditional text seems to involve fields or forms, and I have no experience
or any real knowledge of these.
Is there any way to use Word to create more than one variant of a document?
For example, in FrameMaker I might have conditions for information that is
shown only to Internal customers, only to External customers (usually the
title and legal information), or only to a SPECIFIC customer.
