The use of articles is so ingrained that we notice them only when they are missing or misused. It's more a matter of phonics rather than grammar, because they're determined phonetically by whether the following sound is a vowel or a consonant. A generic noun like "use" doesn't necessarily require a definite article (the), and it would sound funny with an indefinite one ("a use" or "an use". (This is where my linguistics minor comes out.)
