You can't use autonumber counters in variable definitions.

I need numbered headings for a book but cannot add any new para tags into
the template.
We have some workplace-specific conditions there.
So what I want to do is - use a variable for the <$chapnum>-<n+> defition
Lesson 3-1: Setting up .......
Is there a secret trick way to get this done?
Adding the blocks into user defined variables doesn't work.
