And continuing to read (which I wish I'd done more of before posting this :-), Wikipedia has a good write-up, although the section heading, "Creation", is not properly descriptive because the content is a full explanation of how metadata is used in many, many different situations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata#Creation.
