I came across this article about weight reduction on airlines a couple of
years ago and it's stuck with me.

The idea of using iPads for technical docs is a great thing for lots of
reasons (easy search, zoomable images, etc.), but on an airplane I guess I
worry about the iPad running out of battery in times of crisis. Maybe I'm
jaded by too many iPad malfunctions...from the safety of my couch.
