I would ask what the new writer would be expected to accomplish within the first 30, 60 and 90 days on the job.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
As far as salary is concerned, don't bring salary up at all. If they do, ask them what their range for the position is. In a large company, that range will most likely be chiseled into a mountain and unmovable, regardless of what added value you may believe you bring.
