I think that would depend entirely on the document format. For text based files, I'm sure it would be almost trivial. Not so much for Word, though there are tools like Beyond Compare that might work. For FrameMaker, I doubt there's anything other than Frame's native commands, although I suppose you could automate them with ExtendScript.
