There is something compelling about these simple markup languages. InDesign has one as well. I did some large directories in InDesign by transforming XML to InDesign tagged text using XSLT. InDesign tagged text is especially nice because you can set up your template in the interface, then save out to tagged text. This gives you a target for your transformation.
I did a webinar on this technique about 4 years ago. The video is no longer available, but the webinar notes are.

RE the statement that you could never treat FrameMaker markup the way you can treat Ventura markup...
Maker used to support MML... Maker Markup Language. It was a super-minified approach to MIF. You can still find a PDF manual for version 5. The book is 38 pages, including two appendices (an example and a list of error messages) and an index (remember those?). I think they stopped support at tables. You could specify a template in MML, and you could pour MML-ified content into that template.
I actually got onto reproducing MML via the API, with updates to include tables and other constructs that came after -- I thought it would be quite useful. Tedious work, but not too difficult. But then I just switched over to DITA, which is a standardized approach to the same problem. Being standardized, it provides a broader solution IMO.
