Fowler has the following to say:

GENDER,n.,is a grammatical term only. To talk of _persons_ or _creatures_
_of_the_measculine_ or _feminine g., meaning _of_the_male_ or _female_sex,
is either a jocularity (permissable or not according to context) or a
blunder.

Consider some possibilities:

"Dear, let's have gender tonight."
"Now there's a gendery outfit."

or

"Ships are usually referred to in the female."

&c.
