Subject:SUB: ADVICE FOR BEGINNING TECH WRITER From:"Jamie Kirkley, Honors Div., 855-5296" <JKIRKLEY -at- UCS -dot- INDIANA -dot- EDU> Date:Wed, 19 May 1993 13:26:59 EST
I am new to this list serve, so please excuse me if this is an inappropriate
question. I am interested in doing tech writing independently for businesses,
etc. who use outside writers, but I need more training. My background is
journalism (writing & editing), and I have done some tech writing for the
documentation dept of a large medical research corporation.
My questions are:
What is the best way to train for being a tech writer?
Are there special intensive training programs for learning these skills?
If so, where can I locate info of these programs?
Is there an advantage to being trained on-the-job? If so, what are your
recommendations for finding info on entry-level positions?
Can you recommend books/articles/manuals that would be helpful?
Also, I've noticed STC mentioned on some of the messages--is this the Society
for Technical Communicators? Could you give an address or info on this
association?
I appreciate any info/advice you have to offer. Thank you!
