Gene,
To date I've only had one exposure to cd-rom. At
Northern Telecom's local PBX training center, the
cd-rom contained a set of user documentation for
particular PBX models and was accessed using Compass
software on IBM AT clones.
Student teams in installation, maintenance, and
administration courses had a PC at their lab position
allowing them to display any portion of the documentation
they needed. They could also print selected pages on
networked printers.
For once, the PC took up less table space than the
documents they replaced.
Since students could search documents for particular
phrases or index items, their use of the documents
was faster and more accurate. Since they could print
any pages they wished, they could take copies back to
their job sites without vying for Instructor time
making copies of paper documents. Cost of class
greatly decreased since paper documents no longer were
maintained. Time spent showing students how to use
documentation decreased, leaving more time for Instructors
to address more substantive student questions than
"...where is that subject in the book?"
Hope this helps.
Best Regards!
