Steve,
I too have been a writer a long time (13 years) and thought about
what might be next. I have felt a kinship with the support guys
who are "between the users and the programmers."
A couple of other areas that might interest me -- and you -- are:
* usability testing or release-level new feature testing
* pre-sales (e.g., demo) support & development
* user/inside training
Each of these has a significant "documentation" requirement, and
each uses some of the skills I/you have probably developed. Then
again, there's marketing writing, trade publications, etc.
Good Luck!
