TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The below is forwarded from George Byrnes, listowner for the winhlp-l
mailing list and a darn nice guy as far as I can tell, in response to a
request forwarded by me from Lavonna Funkhouser for info on how to subscribe
to WINHLP-L. If we can get the techwr-l FAQ off the ground, BTW, I'd like
this to be part of it; maybe also Brad Mehlenbacher's ultra-list of lists of
interest to technical communicators. Hmmmmm...seems to be no shortage of FAQ
candidates!
One thing George doesn't explicitly mention below: it's important to
remember the distinction between the *listserver* address and the *list*
address. You send subscription requests, commands (viz. listserv refcard
command mentioned below) and etc. to the former, NOT the latter. With the
former you're actually addressing the list-management program that runs
round-the-clock on a computer on Internet somewhere; with the latter you're
addressing EVERYBODY ON THE LIST. Whatever you're using for Net e-mail
address management, you probably want to keep aliases for both addresses.
For winhlp-l, by the way, you get the *list* address by substituting
"winhlp-l" (withOUT the quotes) for "listserv" in the listserver address
George gives below.
Cheers,
PatO'
Don't worry, you'll see my e-mail address soon enough :-)
