Andreas,

The USPS will indeed deliver mail without a ZIP code--in fact, they are
required to.

However, no ZIP code means that the letter will have to be handled by
humans, who will have to determine the letter's destination. This is
(a) a slower process, and (b) a _much_ scarier process.

But don't take my word for it. Send a letter to yourself with no
ZIP code. It'll arrive, after a few days, with the ZIP code written
in by some unnamed USPS employee.
