Subject:Amazed at offered salaries; need input! From:"Bryan Gonderinger test acct." <bjg2 -at- SHAMAN -dot- NEXAGEN -dot- COM> Date:Thu, 26 May 1994 22:04:45 -0600
Hi all,
As many of you may have noted from my previous postings, I was
laid off three weeks ago, and am looking for work.
I have had 7 interviews now, and have just turned down the second
offer. I can't believe the *LOW* salaries some of these places are
offering, and the skills they want in return!!
Am I off-base totally here, or is $25-30k way too low of a range for
tech writers who know Frame on Unix, can read C code, and can work
totally unsupervised on end-user documentation, starting from the
hardware and working into the software aspects of a complete
product??? (not to mention lots other computer platforms/skills, and
a MA in tech writing...??)
I just told a HR person (politely, however, darn it!), that you
basically get what you pay for, and that if he couldn't find someone,
I'd be happy to contract on the side for him, but no, I couldn't take
that large of a pay cut to come work for him, even though I'd love to
work at his company. (and yes, he called at 9:30 pm!)
I'd like to do a sorta "tech-whirl" mini-survey - would all/any of
you mind telling me (either publicly to be posted or privately),
what your duties/expected skills consist of, and what you're
currently making?
I'd be happy to summarize the entire posting, totally anonymously by
city, skills/duties, industry, and pay, if you'all will respond to
this request.
I'm starting to think I'm totally crazy here, being out of work
for almost a month, yet turning jobs down. Am I???? If so,
someone please hit me with a 2x4!!
Thanks in advance for all responses!!
