The exact citation is:

Charles Kemnitz, "How to Write Effective Error Messages," Tech. Comm., 1st Q
1991, 38(1):68-73.

Danger: An imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in
death or serious injury.
Warning: An imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in
death or serious injury.
Caution: A hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in minor or
moderate injury.

The ANSI standards from which these come are: Z535.2 and Z535.4. For ANSI
customer service, call 212/642-4900.

(I just finished writing the warning section of The GUI Style Guide, due in a
few brief months from Academic Press.)
