Unless another explanation exists, I believe this is the correct one.
A4 is of German origin. It was originally DIN (Deutsche Industrie
Normalitaet) A4. DIN stands for German Industry Norms, similar to ANSI;
American National Standards Institute.
I need not go into postwar European history, however A4 became the adopted
norm for the European Common Market.
