"Invoke" carries with it extremely strong religious connotations. (The
dictionary at hand supplies such definitions as "to call upon a higher power
for assistance," "to summon with incantations; conjure." The term was
probably ported to the ACM environment by programmers who believed themselves
to be gods. Since we have a better understanding of the way things really
are, we tech writers ought to write about "using" the programs and
"invoking" the manuals!
