The Department of English invites applications for Director of the
Technical Writing Program. The successful candidate will direct the
B.A. and M.A. degree options as well as the Ph.D. concentration in
technical writing. She or he will also supervise the Teaching
Assistants who teach the Introductory (sophomore) and
Intermediate (junior) technical writing service courses.

Teaching Load
Teaching load will be 2 courses each semester. Tentative teaching
schedule for Fall, 1995: Undergraduate Advanced Technical
Writing (paper documentation) and Teaching Business and
Technical Writing; for Spring, 1996: Undergraduate Introduction to
the Profession and Undergraduate Editing (copy).
Requirements
Ph.D. in Technical Communication or equivalent; experience
directing technical communication degree programs desired;
industrial experience desired. The Director will be expected to
publish research and participate in appropriate professional
organizations. In addition, the Director chairs the Electronic
Classroom Committee that oversees the electronic classroom (25
Intel-based workstations with wordprocessing, presentation,
database, and desktop publishing software). This classroom is used
primarily by technical writing classes although it is open to any
English class. Also, because the Director will actively recruit new
students for the degree programs, he or she will serve on the
Admissions Committee and the Teaching Assistant Selection
Committee.
The Director supervises Teaching Assistants (currently 9) and Part-
Time Instructors (currently 1) who teach the service courses. An
Assistant Director (an advanced graduate student, usually a Ph.D.
student) manages the day-to-day operations of the service courses.
Program
The undergraduate and graduate programs in technical writing
currently offer 17 different courses in technical writing including th
two service courses. Currently, there are 25 undergraduate
students enrolled, 25 M.A. students, and 7 Ph.D. students. At all
levels, the students do not have problems finding employment.
Two tenure-track faculty (one Assistant Professor, one Professor)
teach in the Program. The vacency is to replace the former
Director.
