TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Much of the information given about presenting, e.g., techniques,
avoiding nervousness, effectively using slides, etc., etc., is covered
by programs offered through Toastmasters International. You might
consider joining a local Toastmasters" chapter. They'll help you
develop all the techniques *you* need do get over any problems *you*
have in presenting.
You typically start with a 5-minute speech about yourself then progress
on to longer and more ambitious speeches. Your "speech-mates" help you
by providing immediate feedback on the strong and weak points of each
speech you make. Toastmasters study guides and other information help
you identify the techniques most applicable to the style of speaking you
wish to (or need to) adopt.
If you get really turned on, you can get into the competitive side of
Toastmasters, in which you compete against other speakers and chapters.
There are international contests held routinely.
Give it a try, it's good exercise. Look up Toastmasters International in
your white pages phone directory and give them a call; they'll put you
in contact with a chapter near you.
