If it's only going to take a minute or so, I'd say "this will take a minute or
so. You'll know it's done when X happens."`
One of the products I work on stores data on an optical disk. It can take up to
an hour to format one side of an optical disk. THAT's what I thought you
meant when you said a long time!
Even so, all I say is "this process could take up to an hour".
