TWAIN is an industry-standard protocol for exchanging
information between applications and devices such as scanners.
If you are using a TWAIN-compliant application, you can scan
images by accessing your scanner directly from that application.

The TWAIN-compliant application will usually have a menu option
from the File menu called "Acquire Image" or something like
that. It's a very nice feature; I've used it several times.
