TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
George Hayhoe has listed several valuable tips for getting
the most out of the STC Annual Conference. Here are a few
more. Feel free to chime in with your own.
+ Never eat alone. If you aren't eating one of the
conference-sponsored meals (or if it is a non-Tues dinner)
find another group to go eat with. I had a great time
hanging out last year with a group of *Californians*! :)
+ Take lots of business cards and make sure your E-mail
address is on them. Give your card to everyone.
+ When someone gives you a business card, write notes about
them (where you met them, what they look like) so that when
you get home and you are sorting out your cards, you can
have a better idea of who gave them to you.
+ Take good notes and present your learning to your coworkers
(by briefing, report, or both) when you get back. (I have to
do this this year, so if you have tips, I'd like to have them.)
+ Like George said, attend the social functions. This is your
conference as much as it is anybody else's.
